Landscape in Oil
Location: My Studio - 30 St. Andrew St., Paris ON
During the (early) summer to autumn months we will try to be outdoor as much as possible - painting plein air. In case of rain we will be in the studio using a photograph or sketch you made (bring your own) to paint from, we explore how to paint rather than copy a photo with paint. Explore how to respond to the details visible in a photograph, that may or may not be necessary when painting. How do you look at your photograph or sketch from a painter’s perspective, is it okay, or maybe even necessary to make alterations to make a painting work better? When we are outside we start and finish the painting within the duration of the class, but in the studio you can work on the same piece for a few classes or start a new one every week.
When the weather gets colder, and most people don’t like to paint outdoors anymore, we will stay in the studio.
These classes are for people who have already done some painting previously. I would advise true beginners to take my Monday classes first.
Students are required to bring the following to class:
- Sketchbook or pad & pencil
- Pre-stretched canvas or painting boards, no larger than 12x18” - no smaller than 8x10”
- Variety of brushes for oil paints (not too soft) - flat, round, small, big...
- Palette, rags, Odourless solvents
- Oil paints in the following colours: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow light (lemon yellow), Ochre, Quinacridone Red (Permanent Rose), Ultramarine or Prussian Blue, Cerelean Blue (Manganese blue), and Burnt Umber.
You can bring other colours, but save yourself some money, buy quality paint, and learn your colours. Mixing your colours is a joy and will help to get a better understanding of what colours can do for you.
Classes in my studio are $25.00 per class or $175 for a term of 8 classes. (Missed classes can be tagged on at the back, but need to be taken within three months). They are suitable for beginners and advanced students, and for those 14 years or older. No classes on holiday Mondays.
