Ala Prima painting - Still Life or Landscape

Location: My Studio - 30 St. Andrew St., Paris ON

We explore the different possibilities of Oils and its application to start and finish a painting (Alla Prima). You can either opt to paint the still life, or work from your own photograph. We explore brush vs. palette knife, learn to see and mix colours, all valuable exercises for larger work you might want to work on.

If you are a Total beginner to art it would help to do a few classes with just paper and pencil, learning to translate three dimensional elements to a two dimensional form. As I work with each individual student where they are at in their creative journey, don’t feel intimidated by the painting part of the class, but join us with just paper and pencil.

Students are required to bring the following to class:

  • Sketchbook or pad & pencil
  • Pre-stretched canvas or painting boards, no larger than 12x18” - no smaller than 8x10”
  • Variety of brushes for oil paints (not too soft) - flat, round, small, big...
  • Palette, rags, Odourless solvents
  • Oil paints in the following colours: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow light (lemon yellow), Ochre, Quinacridone Red (Permanent Rose), Ultramarine or Prussian Blue, Cerulean Blue (Manganese blue), and Burnt Umber.

You can bring other colours, but save yourself some money, buy quality paint, and learn your colours. Mixing your colours is a joy and will help to get a better understanding of what colours can do for you.
